Maratha Empire, Ahmedabad, (Gujarat culture) - c. 1850.
A large circular dhal, (shield) constructed form heavy gauge animal hide, (leather).
The face incorporates a complex hand painted central medallion. Polychrome embellishment forms a decorative band at the rim. The reverse is finished with a red pigment ground, corresponding to the face - gilt embellishment in the form of stylised flower heads are positioned over the ground surface - set within a decorative gilt band at the rim.
Four raised star form bosses to the face secure hinged lugs and fabric straps to the reverse.
Diameter - 25 1/2" (648mm).
Weight, (approx.) - 2.5kg.
Condition: Good. Wear at the edges, associated with genuine age and usage. Wear also to the strap arrangement. No repairs and no over-painting. Natural colour and patina.
